For patients, prosthetic restorations (essentially any form of artificial teeth) follow a spectrum of functionality and cost. At the “top” of the scale are dental implants. Dental implants are titanium posts or rods drilled into the upper or lower jawbone – the maxilla or mandible – depending on need. After appropriate healing time the titanium rods, acting much like fence posts or tree roots, are fitted with crowns. That’s the actual artificial tooth or teeth you will chew with, articulate with, and smile with.

Unlike alternative solutions, dental implants, which consist of the implant itself, an abutment, (a connecting piece) and the crown, or artificial tooth, are the superior choice for three main reasons:

Function – Implants are the closest analog to natural teeth, offering a titanium root for a solid foundation. Additionally, speech is easier and clearer with a full mouth of teeth. Dental implants can replace single teeth or multiple teeth.

Aesthetics – Implants complete a smile with beautiful restorations that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. You’ll experience the confidence that comes from a natural smile. It’s a procedure that’s virtually indistinguishable from your natural teeth.

Health– With reliable dental implants, you can eat all the foods required in a healthy, balanced diet. Studies show that patients without teeth do not live as long as those with natural or prosthetic teeth. And with proper care, dental implants will last for decades with maintenance and upkeep nearly identical to natural teeth. Brush and floss as you would normally.

The Implant Difference: Types of Implants

The “magic” behind dental implants versus alternative solutions is the ability for titanium to fuse with natural bone in a process called osseointegration – a course of action discovered more than 50 years ago.

It is this essential medical principle that underlies the long-term success of all implant surgeries. It’s also the foundation to allow for several main varieties of implant placement:

  1. Two-stage dental implants – This is a common approach where after drilling into the jawbone the patient is allowed to heal for a few months. Then, a secondary smaller procedure is performed to reveal the implant and attach the abutment and a temporary crown.
  2. Single-stage implants – This type of dental implant (known also as “Teeth in a Day”) involves placing a longer implant into the jaw and gum so that the top of the implant is exposed. This approach saves the clinician and patient an important step and allows the patient to get all of the operative work done in one day. After healing from implant placement the abutment and restoration are placed onto the titanium rod without exposing the implant again.
  3. Subperiosteal – These dental implants are placed under the gum but on, or above, the jawbone. Most often this type of implant is best for patients who lack sufficient healthy natural jawbone and are unwilling to undergo a bone augmentation procedure to rebuild it.
  4. Immediate Load Dental Implants – Immediate load dental implants complete the implant placement and temporary crown in a single visit. This may be a good option for patients with sufficient natural bone.

Cost of Dental Implant Procedures

The cost of implants can vary widely based on a number of factors. That’s why at the Centers for Dental Implants we encourage you to schedule your initial consultation. Only then can our specialists determine what type of implant procedure works best for your needs (including affordability) and what the price will be.

A better way to assess cost is to think in relative terms and to think long term. While implants may be more costly than a removable denture, the increased functionality and longevity you will have with the implant – several decades versus only a few years – vastly outweighs a denture. Only once your level of bone has been assessed and only once your existing dentition is reviewed can we move forward with effective treatment. Read on in the next section to learn more.

The Implant Process: What to Expect

When working inside a space as small and as delicate as the mouth precision is key. Choosing the path of dental implant restoration is an important decision and it’s natural to be a little nervous. Our job is to remind you there’s nothing to be worried about. Before any holes are drilled a detailed preparation process is initiated. While all cases are individual here’s a general idea of what to expect.

The first step is a comprehensive dental exam where we will take dental X-rays and also construct a digitalized 3D or physical model of your mouth. Next is the treatment plan. Think of like your procedural roadmap. It is at this point we will discuss general costs, how many teeth need replacement, and the options that are available to you that best meet your needs.

This is also the point where you inform your doctor about any medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs and supplements. If you have certain heart conditions or orthopedic implants, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics before surgery to help prevent infection.

Pain management is the next topic at hand. To control pain, anesthesia options include:

  • Local anesthesia – Localized site numbing
  • Sedation anesthesia – Conscious but with a reduced sense of awareness and pain
  • General anesthesia – The patient is unconscious with no perceptual awareness of the passage of time

Your dental care team will review your eating and drinking habits prior to surgery and what works best to maximize a successful outcome. If you’ve elected general anesthesia, plan to have someone take you home after surgery and expect to rest for the rest of the day.
