Braces

Braces are devices that align and straighten teeth. They do so in relation to a patient’s bite. Braces can also fix gaps between teeth and they are a common treatment solution for underbites, as well as other forms of jaw misalignment including, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, among additional complications.

What Are Braces?

Braces are a treatment modality for either cosmetic or structural reasons. Many times its both.

The application of braces moves the teeth as a result of force and pressure on the teeth. Braces consist of four components:

  • Brackets
  • Bonding material
  • Arch wire
  • Ligature elastic, or an O-ring

The teeth move when the wire puts pressure on the brackets and teeth. Sometimes springs or rubber bands are used to direct more force in a localized spot. The process loosens the tooth after which new bone grows in to support the tooth in its new position in a process called bone remodeling.

Traditional metal wired braces are stainless steel and are sometimes used in combination with titanium. The second-most common type of braces are self-ligating. Self-ligating braces do not require elastic ties. Instead, the wire goes through the bracket. The benefits of this approach include: reduced treatment time, less pain on the teeth, and fewer adjustments are required.

Types of Braces

  • Gold-plated stainless steel – ideal for patients allergic to nickel, but also chosen for their aesthetic appeal.
  • Lingual braces – custom-made braces are bonded to the back of the teeth instead of the front.
  • Titanium – these braces resemble stainless steel braces but are lighter and just as strong. Like with gold this is a good alternative for patients with nickel allergies. But it’s important to note they are more expensive than stainless braces.
